Born and raised in Rockford, Illinois, a 90-minute drive to Chicago would prove worth memorizing for Virgil Abloh. After getting his Master's at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Virgil interned at Fendi alongside Kanye West where they would connect and bond over their shared ideas and visions. In 2010, Virgil became the creative director of Kanye's creative agency, DONDA. This now brings us to 2012. Virgil has created his new video lookbook for Pyrex Vision and the hype surrounding it was very indifferent. You had people who could understand the small collection; Champion tees, hoodies, b-ball shorts, flannels, and socks. Same old material designs we have seen before but this time they were plastered in uniform lettering and some coupled with renaissance artwork. Many were fixed on the prices as they were astronomical compared to the seemingly low-cost blanks they were produced on.
In late 2012, Virgil would meet up with Davide De Giglio, the timing could not be any better. Let’s go back to Milan, 1997. Davide was just starting his denim import/export company called Vintage 55. The company would grow, along with Davide’s experience and knowledge to the point where they were producing their own denim products. Now back to 2012, Virgil would have creative control and Davide would be in charge of production and distribution. This would introduce the high-quality fabrics that would work their way into every Off-White product. In 2015, Davide would link with Claudio Antonioli and Marcelo Burlon and create New Guards Group. They would go on to bring in other designers like Palm Angels & Kirin Peggy Gou. Although Pyrex Vision did not last long, some can argue it has only grown into Off-White and would later influence countless collaborations. Simply put, Off-White picked up where Pyrex Vision left off.
